In its 14th year, with over 750 submissions from 80+ countries, The McMinnville Sci-Fi Film Festival is back again for what might be the largest festival it has ever put together!
The Sci-Fi Film Festival coincides with the McMenamins UFO Festival in downtown McMinnville every year and makes for a slew of different events over the two or three-day festivals. However, the usual location was unavailable due to the fire at 3rd Street Pizza & the Moonlight Theater which closed the business. So, we improvised and devised a festival with multiple events at different locations around McMinnville! With five total events at three locations, two Film Festival screenings, three comedy shows, and one awards ceremony, there’s a little something for everyone.
With so many wonderful videos to choose from this year, the selection team had to get down the hundreds of hours of submissions to just four. On Friday, May 17th, at the Carnegie Room at the McMinnville Public Library, you can see the first screening of the McMinnville Sci-Fi Film Festival. Doors open at 5:30 pm, and introduction begins at 5:45 with Martin Solano, creator of the Sci-Fi Film Fest, with a prompt 6 PM start time for the screening. (Carnegie Room (inside McMinnville Public Library),225 NE Adams St, McMinnville, OR | 5:30 PM | Price: Free) Tickets are encouraged, but not required. All ages.

And then there’s the comedy show! On Friday, at 9 PM, The Art Critique Show comes to Reel Hollywood Video for a night of auctions and funny jokes. The comedian hosts go to local thrift stores (Goodwill, Vintage places, etc.) and find pieces of art for fellow comics to roast on stage. And then after the roasting, the hosts allow the audience to take these roasted & beautifully unique pieces of art home by bidding on them in a live auction! It’s a whole lot of fun. (Reel Hollywood Video, 105 NW 9th Street, McMinnville, OR | 9 PM | $20) 18+ Recommended.

On Saturday at 2 PM doors (2:30 showtime), you can see the Sci-Fi Comedy Riff Show. What is it? Think Whose Line Is It Anyways meets MST3K: It’s the Comedy Show where the sci-fi is old, the comics are funny, and the points don’t matter. This is a FREE EVENT (tips encouraged) located right on 3rd Street at the Cabana Club. (Cabana Club, 425 NE 3rd St, McMinnville, OR 97128cMinnville, OR | 2 PM | Price: Free/Reserved Seating $10/Tips Encouraged) Ages 21+.
No tickets are needed, just a positive attitude!
